Reading January 6-10, 2014

In reading this week we will be incorporating much of our work into our social studies research. We will spend a large chunk of time reading and learning about each of the continents. The overall skill in reading is DETERMINING IMPORTANCE through INFERENCE. We will strengthen this skill through repeated readings of different texts to figure out what the author wants us to take out. This skill will also help us to become more descriptive and creative writers as we try to tell stories without giving exact details. Look for some fun things to come home over the next 2 weeks as it is a continuing skill along with continents & expository writing!

Writing & Social Studies Jan 6-10, 2014

This week in writing I will be introducing a new form of writing--EXPOSITORY WRITING!

The students will be using a graphic organizer to answer different STANDARDIZED QUESTIONS--for example, this week, I will be modeling the following 2 questions:
1. Describe your ideal vacation. List 2 reasons why it is your favorite. Use supporting details.
2. Describe your dream bedroom. List 2 things you would include in your bedroom. Use supporting details.

We will also begin using the same graphic organizer to help us narrow down our research regarding a specific continent. We will be learning a lot about North America this week as a class while students individually study the other continents in preparation for presenting their findings by late next week or early the following week depending on how quickly they can work with today's snow day.

Over the next two weeks, in Social Studies we will also be learning the location of the continents as well as key ideas about each of the continents.

If you have any interesting continents books at home, feel free to send them to enhance our research! We have quite a good variety in the school, but kids love bringing their own materials from home as well!

Jan 6-10, 2014 Everyday Math

Tuesday: Lesson 5.11 Place Value in Decimals
Graded homelink-5.11 Comparing Decimals (greater than and less than, naming parts and some practice subtraction problems at the end!)

Wednesday: Lesson 5.12 Sunrise-Sunset Line Graphs
Graded homelink-5.12 Subraction and Multiplication Practice (2 subtraction facts using different subtraction methods as well as naming all the x2,x3 and x4 multiplication facts that they know)

Thursday: Unit 5 Study Guide--we will work on this in class.  Please continue to work on the following skills to review for Friday's assessment:
1. Writing 5-digit numbers (name the number in each place value and have your child write the 5-digit number)
2. Comparing 5-digit numbers (greater than, less than, equal to)
3. Using basic facts to compute extended facts (i.e. 9+4=13; so 900+400=1,300)
4. Finding the sum of 4 addends (i.e. 2+8+14+16=40)
5. Using strategies to solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of multidigit whole numbers. Make ballpark estimates (i.e.45+19=64; ballpark 50+20=70)
6. Finding the perimeter  and area of a rectangle

Part B consists of:
1. Writing a decimal and a fraction for a shaded region on a grid
2. Comparing decimals (greater than, less than, equal to)
3. Writing decimal numbers (name the number in each place value and have your child write the decimal--i.e. 5 in the tenths, 4 in the ones and 9 in the hundreds=4.59)

Friday:  Unit 5 Assessment--the students will do the assessment during school and I will send home the Unit 6 Family Letter outlining our next unit as well as a Practice Set that will be graded on Monday.

Again, let me know if you have any questions!
